Busy Monday Night Training Series

This past Monday May 14th, 2012 was a busy one
for the West Volunteers (Keystone Valley Fire Department). The PA DOH is now issuing Photo ID EMT cards to help
with identification of all EMT's within the state. Monday night, The CCDES asked “Chrissy”
to come out to Station 28 to issue these new cards. All members of the department
arrived at 1800 to begin receiving the new cards. After getting new cards, at 1930 hours EMS
Lieutenant Scot Kreger instructed all EMS members in blood borne pathogens training.
This is required training for all EMT's and any member of the department that
runs ambulance. While this class was going on, a crew of 8 loaded into Rescue
28 for mutual aide training with Lancaster County Station 5-2 (Christiana).

Upon arriving at Station 5-2, the officers of 28 and 5-2 gathered and planned a
quick rundown of the agenda for the evening. Rescue 28 provides vehicle rescue
services to a section of 5-2's local area. The purpose of the training was to
strengthen our working relationship with Station 5-2 members.

We began with a review of our layout on Rescue 28. After reviewing what is
carried and our operation on an accident, all crews split into two groups. We
used two donated vehicles and worked with members to go over vehicle
extrication. We went over many techniques and our operational safety guidelines
completing a extrication. Crews used this great opportunity to familiarize
themselves with the hydraulic power tools and hand tools we use.

In all, all crews worked great together and the crew of Rescue 28 had a great
time! We would like to thank Chief Reimold and your great crew for the
opportunity to strengthen our bond. We look forward to future training with
your crew.

All personnel were thanked for coming out and attending three diffferent events that took place on Monday evening. In all we had over 25 active members present with eight additional members attending some VRT with Station 5-2.

Pomeroy attends Twin Valley Fire Company's Parade and Housing

On Saturday May 12th, 2012 the Pomeroy Fire Company Engine 29-1 traveled to Twin Valley Fire Department’s Parade and Housing.
The Twin Valley Fire Department put on a parade and housing for their members, active crew, and neighboring stations which help put things into perspective for all their hard work, dedication which led to the combination of Elverson and Morgantown Fire Companies.
Engine 29-1 attended the great parade and housing of the Twin Valley Fire Department which held over 100 fire apparatus and many companies from Chester, Berks, Lancaster and Montgomery Counties. The event was held on a beautiful day and had good spirits throughout.

The crew on Engine 29-1 (Madonna Operator, Short OIC, and Blank EMT) enjoyed the day with fellow fire and EMS personnel at the Twin Valley Parade which consisted of the entire day. The engine brought back a First Place Rescue/Pumper 2001 and Older Award which was an excitement to our Company and another proud moment.

Neighboring Station Modena Fire Company brought back three awards which they deserved as their crews had their equipment cleaned and prepped for the parade.

Even our Company President sat in as the spectators watched on cheering and encouraging the passing apparatus.

Unit: Engine 29-1

From the Reading Post:
More than a year of preparation culminated Saturday in Caernarvon Township as about 500 firefighters on 100 vehicles lined the streets for the Twin Valley Fire Department's first parade since its formation six years ago.

The fire company, which moved into its firehouse at Routes 23 and 401 in 2010, resulted from the consolidation of the former Morgantown and Elverson fire companies.

"This is kind of a grand finale for us," Deputy Fire Chief Corey Hostetler said of the parade. "It's kind of like a housewarming for our fire department. This is the first chance we've had since we moved into this building."

Featuring fire and EMS apparatus, the parade moved on Route 23 through Morgantown and Elverson. A dedication ceremony followed at the firehouse on Main Street in Elverson.

"Our guys volunteer their time 24 hours a day, seven days a week for free," Hostetler said, adding that the turnout served as a display of the public's gratitude.

Hostetler said everyone seemed to have a great time, even up until 6:30 p.m., as guests relaxed and listened to a band.

"It went absolutely fantastic," he said. "We couldn't have asked for a better day."...

Parkesburg Purchases a New Ladder Truck

The Pomeroy Fire Company (Keystone Valley Fire Department) wishes to congratulate the Parkesburg Fire Company (Truck Company) on the purchase of their new Ladder 28.
The Parkesburg Fire Company is pleased to announce the purchase of a new ladder truck to serve the community's needs. The new truck will be a 2012 Pierce PUC 75' Aerial. The truck will have an aluminum ladder, 500 gallons of water with a 1,500gpm pump. The truck was designed by several members of the company whom spent many months developing and designing the new piece.
This new truck will update the previous ladder truck, a 1974 Pierce Arrow which was sold in January 2012. The fire company applied for a FEMA grant last year for funding to update the old ladder truck due to the increasing maintenance costs and age. In February of this year the Parkesburg Fire Company was awarded $473,100 towards the purchase of this new ladder truck in which cost's total $700,000. It should be noted without this grant the purchase of a new truck would not be possible.
The new truck is currently on the assembly line and is slated to be completed on September 5th 2012. After the truck is released from the assembly line it will have all equipment mounted which is expected to take a month. All members will have required training on the new truck which is also expected to take several weeks.

A Drawing of the truck will be available soon...

During
the week of April 23rd – 27th staff members Danielle Celii and Christopher
Haines of the Pomeroy Volunteer Fire Company #1, joined firefighters from
across the nation, at the Pittsburgh International Airport in Allegheny County,
Pa for ARFF School. The facility is one
of the top ARFF training facilities in the nation training over 1,000 people
annually, in airport firefighting techniques.

During
the course of the class ARFF/EMT Celii and Haines learned about necessary
Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) requirements, regulations and practices
for ARFF personnel. The class was comprised of 20 hours of lecture and 20 hours
of live fire exercises where students honed their skills in aircraft
firefighting utilizing specialty ARFF firefighting vehicles and equipment in
live fire conditions.

The
Pomeroy Volunteer Fire Company #1 is currently the only public sector fire
company in Chester County, Pa that utilizes FAA certified firefighters. With
the addition of ARFF/ EMT Celii and Haines this increases our roster of ARFF
certified firefighters to five (5) personnel. Giving us the ability to provide
a higher caliber of firefighter to Sikorsky Global Helicopter’s and the
community we serve.

We
would like to thank Sikorsky Global Helicopter’s and the Allegheny county
Airport Authority, ARFF school for assisting us with making this training a
reality.
