Monday Night Training Series with all Three (3) Companies

Tuesday, April 3, 2012  On Monday April 2nd, 2012 the Pomeroy-Parkesburg-Atglen Fire Companies held a joint training for equipment familierzation. All three companies personnel met at Station # 28 (Central Station) to review one anothers equipment and apparatus.

This training was needed for the personnel to become cross-trained on operating one another's equipment in case personnel respond to a different station location for a response of a particular unit. This is the beginning of our department training series.

Many of the EMS providers were cross-trained on the Ambulances however Parkesburg Ambulance 28 is larger then Pomeroy's three (3) type III ambulances. Also Engine 26 has some different equipment and pump features then Pomeroy and Parkesburg's engines.

Personnel reviewed the new Ladder 28 drawings and also discussed the future of our combination Department and where it will lead to......

By the End of April a new name will be chosen and many await to see what we will be called in our Western Department of 26-28-29.

While personnel reviewed and got trained on one another's equipment the Chief Officer's attended two separate meetings. One EMS Committee meeting and one Fire Committee meeting which were attended too. However it is imperative that the Chief Officer's work together to develop policies and operating guidelines to operate the new Department under.

With that being said the new training schedule has been posted and we look forward to what next Monday night will bring "Working Regionally to survive Locally".

Pennsylvania Bans Texting While Driving

Tuesday, March 6, 2012  Pennsylvania cell phone/texting news:

A ban on text messaging while driving has been approved by Gov. Tom Corbett and

Harrisburg – Pennsylvania's new law prohibiting text-based communication while driving will take effect at 12:01 a.m. on March 8, making texting while driving a primary offense carrying a $50 fine.

"Your most important job when behind the wheel is to focus only on driving. Most people would never close their eyes for five seconds while driving, but that's how long you take your eyes of the road, or even longer, every time you send or read a text message," PennDOT Secretary Barry J. Schoch said. "It's not just your own life you're risking; it's the lives and safety of every motorist around you."

The new law specifically does the following:
• Makes it a primary offense to use an Interactive Wireless Communication Device (IWCD) to send, read or write a text-based message.
• Defines an IWCD as a wireless phone, personal digital assistant, smartphone, portable or mobile computer or similar devices that can be used for texting, instant messaging, emailing or browsing the Internet.
• Defines a text-based message as a text message, instant message, email or other written communication composed or received on an IWCD.
• Institutes a $50 fine for convictions.
• Makes clear that this law supersedes and preempts any local ordinances restricting the use of interactive wireless devices by drivers.

"This is a serious problem and we are hoping that we can educate citizens on the dangers of texting while driving and prevent future accidents," said State Police Commissioner Frank Noonan. "Our troopers will attempt to use observations of the driver while the vehicle is in motion to determine if traffic stops are warranted. An example might be the motorist continues to manipulate the device over an extended distance with no apparent voice communication.

"Ultimately, we hope that our enforcement efforts will create voluntary compliance by the majority of motorists," Noonan said.

In 2010, there were nearly 14,000 crashes in Pennsylvania where distracted driving played a role, with 68 people dying in those crashes.

"Change Your Clocks - Change Your Battery" 3/11/2011

Tuesday, February 28, 2012   The Pomeroy Fire Company wants to remind everyone when they change their clocks on Sunday March 11, 2012 to remember to please change your smoke detector batteries as well. Clocks Change ahead this Sunday March 11, 2012 at 2 A.M.

What does this mean and what does it have to do with fire safety?

The Pomeroy Fire Company wants everyone to know that Smoke Alarms (Detectors) can save lives when operating properly. There are many types, however most smoke alarms are battery operated or have battery backup features. It is important to test your alarms each month to assure that they are in working order. We also need to be sure the battery has adequate power to operate the alarm. Smoke alarms have a monitoring system for the battery and start chirping when the battery is low. All of this sounds great and fool proof; however several lives were lost due to non-working smoke alarms. Many were found without batteries in them.

The Reason? Maybe someone took the battery for a game or radio, or removed the battery to stop the chirping or maybe they were going to replace it and forgot.

Because of these findings the program "Change Your Clock - Change Your Battery" was developed.

IF everyone follows this program they should never be subject to a non-working smoke detector due to a missing or weak battery. The Action is simple and we are reminded each year at Daylight savings time. Each year we change our clocks. In the spring (March) we move them ahead one hour and in fall (November) we move them back one hour. Each time we do this we need to change the battery in all the smoke alarms. If a specific battery type is recommended then that's the one to use. Whether one is recommended or not, always be sure you are purchasing a fresh battery. Always check the dates on the battery.

IMPORTANT NOTE: The life of a smoke detector is 10 years. If your detector is 10 years old or older, it should be replaced. If you are in need of a smoke detector or unsure about how many you should have or need, please contact Pomeroy Fire Company and ask for smoke detectors, and the Pomeroy Fire Company will provide you with the smoke detectors and install it to ensure you and your family remain safe.
