Escape Planning:
(From the National Fire Protection Association)
Fire can spread rapidly through your home, leaving you as little as two minutes to escape safely once the alarm sounds. Your ability to get out depends on advance warning from smoke alarms, and advance planning — a home fire escape plan that everyone in your family is familiar with and has practiced.
Sparky the Fire Dog has a grid for you to print and plan your escape as a family. Please try to keep the following in mind when planning your escape:
- Walk around and make sure the floor plan is accurate and that everyone in the house knows where all the doors, windows, fire extinguishers and smoke detectors are.
- Check all smoke detectors to make sure they are workly properly.
- Make sure all doors and windows can be opened easily.
- Choose a family meeting spot outside a safe distance away from the home.
- REMEMBER DO NOT EVER GO BACK INTO THE HOME ONCE YOU HAVE ESCAPED.
- Practice your escape with all family members regularly.
- Remember to call 9-1-1 when you are a safe distance from the fire.
- Teach small children how to call 9-1-1 and what to say!
